Abstract

Globally, the large numbers of young people who are not in any kind of employment, education or training (NEET) are a cause of great concern. A multidisciplinary body of evidence indicates associations between being NEET, and especially remaining NEET for an extended period of time, and negative outcomes such as deteriorating physical and mental health, substance abuse, precarious job prospects, discouragement, social exclusion, and increased risk behaviour2. At the societal level, large numbers of young people who are NEET are predicted to lead to negative economic consequences such as lost output, lost government revenue and increased public spending, for instance in areas like the criminal justice system.3
