Abstract

The experimental determination of converter-fed induction motor (IM) efficiency continues to receive significant attention from stakeholders due to the extensive use of Variable Frequency Drives in industrial applications. Although recent research and legislative activities have culminated in the development of several standards and technical specifications, the experimental procedures and loss analysis can hardly be
considered to have matured. This is mainly due to inconsistent reports in literature as well as a lack of explicit guidance on certain technical aspects of the testing procedure. Thanks to continuous feedback from the research community, many of these technical issues have recently been addressed in the new IEC standard 60034-2-3: 2020. This paper first reviews previous technical challenges and considerations in the determination of additional harmonic losses from the scientific point of view, and then justifies the adoption of a simplified approach for obtaining fast and reliable estimates of converter-fed IM efficiency without performing a converter load test. Since constant additional harmonic losses are the main reason for the decrease in IM efficiency under converter operation at rated frequency, the elimination of the converter load test is justified.
