This system is currently used for analysis of numerous volatile aromatic compounds which include esters, fatty acids, alcohols, aldehydes, terpenes etc. It is also used to analyse non-volatiles with the inclusion of a prior compound derivitization step. The GCMS system can used to detect, identify and quantify a wide range of organic and inorganic substances and it is a popular tool for conducting large scale metabolomics studies but it can also be utilized for projects with much less compound complexity. As the MS is of a ‘Triple Quad’ design, it is well suited to quantify very low levels of targeted compounds. The appropriate columns are plumbed into the GC system allowing for separation of the compounds of interest prior to introduction into the MS.
